Digital infrastructures do not simply transmit information; they actively determine what becomes visible, accessible, or suppressed.
Stockport Emotion Map
Nold's work is directly relevant to Designing Visibility in three ways. First, it demonstrates that design can visualise what systems ordinarily conceal emotion, experience, the felt reality of moving through a space. Second, it uses participatory data, centring the voices of those who actually inhabit the territory rather than those who administer it an approach that directly informs my commitment to centring Sudanese civilian experience over Western institutional narratives. Third, it shows that absence and presence can coexist within a single visualisation: the spikes of arousal on the map communicate intensity, but the flat, unmarked areas communicate silence. This tension between marked and unmarked space is core to my own design language of disruption and absence. As Rankin (2016) argues, what a map omits is as significant as what it includes.

Du Bois Image Analysis
Du Bois refuses to contain racial violence within American borders he maps it as a global system. This directly mirrors my project's argument that internet shutdowns in Sudan are not isolated failures but part of a longer, structural pattern of whose voices are suppressed and whose suffering enters the record. Benjamin (2019) establishes this lineage explicitly: algorithmic erasure extends systems that began long before digital infrastructure existed. Du Bois proves that data visualisation can carry that moral argument without sacrificing analytical rigour a standard my own illustrated work must meet.
